How to Clean Your Richboro, PA Home’s Vents

November 16, 2022

Your vents allow the HVAC system to distribute warm air into your home during the colder months. These structures may become dirty with time. Here are some tips for cleaning your home’s HVAC vents in Richboro, PA.

Why Cleaning Your Vents Is Vital

Dirty vents cause biological contaminants to accumulate, affecting your indoor air quality. Contaminated indoor air can trigger allergies and result in headaches, sneezing, dry throat, nasal congestion, and watery eyes. If you work from home, you may have a difficult time concentrating with the foul smell from biological growth lingering in your home.

Dirty vents also block smooth airflow, causing your HVAC system to work harder. This increases its wear and tear on the components of your system. Dirty and blocked ducts may also result in uneven heating throughout your home.

What You Need

The right tools make the work easier and enable you to clean your vents efficiently. You’ll need a bucket, a screwdriver, gloves, a scrubbing brush, dish soap, goggles, and a vacuum with a hose.

Start Cleaning

Start by turning off your HVAC system, then use the screwdriver to remove the vents. If your vents are dirty, your ducts might also be dirty.

Use the vacuum hose to remove as much dirt and dust as possible. Ensure you have covered your nose and mouth with a cloth to avoid inhaling these contaminants. You can use some goggles for your eyes, too.

Take your vents outside and shake off the excess dirt and dust. Add soapy water to the bucket and soak the vents for 10-15 minutes to eliminate grease that allows dust to stick. Soaking them for too long may cause them to rust if they aren’t made of stainless steel and contain iron.

Finish Up

Dry your vents and put them back with your screwdriver. Turn on your HVAC system for about 30 minutes for the air filter to trap any dust disturbed during the cleaning process. Replace your air filter, and you’re good to go.
